Total branding, art direction and design for New Jersey Straight Edge band SEARCH.
This was SEARCH's debut 7" on Revelation Records and the layout is meant to pay tribute to the label's classic, late 80s releases while still maintaining a fresh aesthetic that is distinctly modern.
*Note: I play bass guitar in this band.
The back cover (as well as the vinyl b-side) both focus heavily on the photography of JC Carey. His photos capture the energy of the band and the music contained on the record. Typography and branding are understated yet bold and classic—again paying homage to Revelation Records' classic design of the late 1980s.
The same theme is continued on the lyric sheet.
The less rare vinyl option was transparent blue, an obvious yet successful choice.
From the remains of seminal New Jersey straight edge bands Hands Tied, Turning Point and Floorpunch comes the five-piece unit known as Search. Much like the bands from which they spawned, Search kicks out a classic style of East Coast hardcore that's lean, mean and created to elicit the type of sing-alongs and stage dives you would have expected to witness on Sunday afternoons of yesteryear.
While the six songs of their debut 7", "Between The Lines," are a testament to a specific style and sound of hardcore, Search most definitely exists in the here and now with a timeless message that is still as relevant and important today as it was when the members themselves discovered it in their teens.
1. Between The Lines
2. Slipping Away
4. Nothing Left
5. In The Gray
6. It's Gone
